February Reflections: Black History, Black Sound, Black Strength

by Courtland Pickens

February 15, 2026

February is sacred for us.

It’s a time to honor the shoulders we stand on. The pioneers. The freedom fighters. The artists. The pastors. The teachers. The dreamers.

And here in Minneapolis, when we talk about the sounds of Blackness, we’re not just talking metaphorically. We’re talking about Sounds of Blackness — a group we truly look up to. They’ve shown the world what happens when gospel, soul, and truth collide. Their music has always carried hope, culture, excellence, and unapologetic Black pride.

They remind us that our sound matters.

Our sound heals.
Our sound educates.
Our sound unites.
Our sound fights.

At the same time, this month hasn’t just been celebration — it’s been heavy. Minneapolis felt deep pain with the loss of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti. Two lives that mattered. Two families grieving. And once again, our city is confronted with injustice and the tension that follows.

We don’t ignore that.
We don’t rush past it.
We don’t become numb.

We pray.
We reflect.
We build.
We sing anyway.

Because that’s what we do.

Black history is not just something we study — it’s something we live. It’s happening right now in how we show up for our community, how we mentor young people, how we create safe spaces, and how we use our voices with intention.

We honor those who came before us by standing tall today.

Affirmations for This Season

• I am rooted in strength greater than my struggle.
• My voice carries purpose.
• I honor those we’ve lost by living intentionally.
• Hope is still alive in Minneapolis.
• Our sound will not be silenced.

Black is beautiful.
Black is powerful.
Black is resilient.

And we’re still building.
