After the Fireworks

Every year, we celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks, cookouts, and red, white, and blue. We celebrate America’s independence as though freedom was the finish line.

But history tells us otherwise.

July 4th, 1776 wasn’t the end of the story. It was the beginning of it.

The Declaration of Independence was just that: a declaration. There were still battles to fight, sacrifices to make, and a country to build. Independence didn’t mean everything fell into place. It simply meant the next chapter had begun.

Lately, I’ve realized my life feels a lot like that.

A few weeks ago, I graduated high school. In a few more, I’ll pack my bags and head to college. For so long, graduation felt like the goal. I thought once I crossed that stage I’d finally feel like my story was finished.

Instead, I just feel… anticipation for the chapters ahead.

Excitement, appreciation, anxiety.

Maybe that’s what freedom has always felt like.

God gives us freedom but He never promises we’ll know exactly what comes next. He simply asks us to trust Him enough to take the next step.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths” Proverbs 3:5-6 (KJV).

I think that’s the kind of independence God desires for us; not a life where we no longer need Him, but one where we’re free to choose Him everyday.

Freedom isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about having the courage to keep walking when you don’t.

As we celebrate Independence Day, I hope we remember that the most important part of any journey isn’t the moment freedom is declared. It’s what we choose to do with it afterwards.

Because every ending is also the beginning of something God is still writing.

“Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free” Galatians 5:1 (KJV) .

Maybe the fireworks aren’t just a celebration of where we’ve been, but a reminder to look ahead. The next chapter is waiting.

God has already gone before me. I don’t have to know every step; I only have to trust the One who does.
